Winter Sun

Thomas, always eager to pitch in, helping my daughter sort vintage millinery and trims in the late afternoon sun.

Heading North

Another day, another blimp sighting.  This time, heading north at sunset, back to the blimp corral.

Mutual Admiration Society

My daughter was by yesterday and spotted Thomas on the porch railing, waiting to be noticed.

The camera captured him just as he happily discovered who had opened the window for him, concealed behind the curtain.  Once fondest greetings were exchanged, it was time to make a beeline for the kitchen, to see what we might rustle up for him.

Stripes On A Donkey

That's my sister and me, above, in made by our mom matching dresses on a family day trip to Tijuana in 1955.  We thought we were riding a real zebra.  Below, that's us again, in 1968, old enough at 16 and 18 to cross the border by ourselves to shop for hand embroidered blouses, handmade leather shoes and sterling silver jewelry.

Rainy Day Visitor

We've had some much needed rain the last couple days.  Thomas stopped by for an extended visit and fell asleep, smiling, in front of the fire.

What's Blooming In Winter

The daisies are starting to come on strong, lifting their colorful blossoms above the gray green foliage along the walkway.

Flying By

The Goodyear blimp flew by through the overcast yesterday, hugging the coast on its way to Torrey Pines for a golf tournament.  It's still a rare enough sight that we dash outside when we hear its approach and watch it pass in admiration.  The only thing that has changed since childhood is earnest waving to the pilot while running down the street trying to keep up with it.

It's been all chicks, all the time.

What's Blooming In Winter

A bee's eye view of what's blooming in the front yard right now.   Above, a miniature chrysanthemum.  And below, a buttery yellow jonquil, with the sweetest scent in the garden.

The gallardias, below, have been blooming nonstop through every season.  This one is called "Goblin" - besides being an ever bloomer, it reseeds itself prolifically and snail and slugs don't like it.

Home Repairs

A broken bolt on the flue explained why more smoke was coming into the living room than going up the chimney.

Predawn Homemade Carrot Cake

It's like having vegetables for breakfast, right?

The last of Christmas is finally packed away on the top closet shelf.

What's Blooming In Winter

The trumpet vine that grows along the front porch is still in bloom.

A food centered day - shopping for it, preparing it and eating.

A Visitor

We're on the Pacific flyway of migratory birds.  A very large snowy egret stopped by yesterday and had a look around before it took to the sky in search of greener pastures.

Best Intentions

Despite my best intentions, the Christmas decorations are not quite put away.

But the trees are stripped and everything just needs to be wrapped in tissue paper and tucked into boxes.

Walking In The Neighborhood

My daughter joined me on a walk through the neighborhood yesterday.  It was cold, with an especially blustering wind.  The towering Norfolk pines on the hill behind the house were swaying and a pair of autumn leaves were tumbling down the street together.

Thomas stopped by while we were unloading boxes and found a spot just his size in the packing materials.

Day Into Night

Out the kitchen window, two palm trees lean together as a cool day fades to a cold winter's night.

A Simple Pleasure

Window shopping at Christmas with my daughter.

Still Putting It All Away

It's going to take a few more days to get everything back into boxes and into the closet.

Sunday, January 6, 2013

We took a short ride up the coast yesterday, just as the sun was setting and had soften everything up.  Above, looking south, and below, looking north.  Just a few people on the sand on a winter's afternoon, with a thick marine layer lying offshore, ready to move in after dark.

Yesterday On The Beach

My daughter took me along to the beach yesterday when she went for a surf.

My favorite neighbor was in the water, shredding, as usual.

When my daughter emerged from the sparkles, it was time to head home.
